Understanding the Design Process to Solve Customer Problems

what is design process

Using ordinary classroom materials, students act as biomedical engineering teams challenged to design prototype models that demonstrate semipermeability to help medical students learn about kidney dialysis. A model consists of two layers of a medium separated by material acting as the membrane. Students further their understanding of the engineering design process while combining mechanical engineering and bioengineering to create an automated medical device.

Student pairs design, redesign and perform simple experiments to test the differences in thermal conductivity (heat flow) through different media (foil and thin steel). Then students create visual diagrams of their findings that can be understood by anyone with little background on the subject, appl...

Stage 5: Test—Try the Solutions Out

Once the testing is complete and all of the necessary changes have been made to your high fidelity user interface, the product is ready to be handed over to the development team for implementation. The key here is to think about the user experience first and foremost. By answering these questions, you can start to form a clear picture of what your interface should look like. The back and forth and revising drawings can be hard to manage and you don’t want a client’s change to go unnoticed until it’s a costly and time-consuming delay. Our tool has multiple project views so you can track progress on Gantt chart, sheet, calendar and list views.

Courses That Help You Become a Great Product Designer

This synergy between UX design and Agile methods enhances the product's usability. It also ensures that the final output closely aligns with user expectations and needs. Design thinking methods and strategies belong at every level of the design process. However, design thinking is not an exclusive property of designers—all great innovators in literature, art, music, science, engineering, and business have practiced it. The design thinking process should not be seen as a concrete and inflexible approach to design; the component stages identified should serve as a guide to the activities you carry out. The stages might be switched, conducted concurrently or repeated several times to gain the most informative insights about your users, expand the solution space and hone in on innovative solutions.

In small groups, students create circuits using items in their "survival kits" to create maximum voltage, measu... Students take on the challenge of assembling a light sensor circuit in order to observe its readings using the Arduino Serial Monitor. They also create their own unique visualization through software called Processing.

This means that each stage of the process was undertaken and completed before the next stage of the process could begin. In a sense, all design since the dawn of the human species has been user experience (UX) design, because every designed object is intended for a use. However, that’s not what we mean by “UX design” in the context of today’s design industry.

Lean UX

In large companies, a UX designer typically works with other designers such as UX researchers and visual designers. In smaller companies such as start-ups, UX designers tend to handle all the design work. If the UX design aligns with and supports broader business goals such as increased sales, higher customer retention or reduced support calls, this indicates success. Since team members may be in different time zones, it's important to maintain a workflow where individuals can contribute at their own pace without delaying the project. Clear documentation and updates in shared tools facilitate this asynchronous work. Before you begin designing or defining the problem, gather extensive data on the user environment, behaviors and expectations.

The need for other approaches

All of these elements come together to create an aesthetically pleasing and easy-to-use interface. A competitive bid process is when the architect looks over the local construction companies and their past projects. Then, the bidding process starts and construction companies will compete for the job, a process that usually takes three weeks. Quality, cost and experience are considered when choosing the winning bid.

The challenge is to make the vehicles entirely out of dry pasta using only adhesive (such as hot glue) to hold the components together. Students brainstorm, design, and build a cooler and monitor its effectiveness to keep a bottle of ice water cold in comparison to a bottle of ice water left at room temperature. Students engage in design by choosing from a range of materials to build their prototype.

Imagine your goal is to improve an onboarding experience for new users. Directly observe what they do, how they think, and what they want, asking yourself things like ‘what motivates or discourages users?

Now that we’ve gone through the 6 main UX roles, you should have a much clearer idea of the one that appeals the most to you. Everything You Need To Know by Simplilearn for helpful tips, insights and more. If empathy is the heart of UX design, collaboration is the lifeblood. The number of roles and departments will vary between brands and across industries. This also applies to the scopes and sizes of these roles and departments. After enrolling in a program, you may request a withdrawal with refund (minus a $100 nonrefundable enrollment fee) up until 24 hours after the start of your program.

It can be applied to various types of problems inside and outside product design, and works to be solution-based rather than problem-based. This phase brings the idea into the world through the creation of physical models or digital wireframes and prototypes. By visualizing solutions on paper, teams can better identify potential issues or determine if the solution properly meets user needs. During ideation, the product team, designers and software engineers brainstorm possible solutions to the problem.

This worked pretty well in an age when digital products were updated at intervals of several years (think of software like Microsoft Office). But during the 2000s the pace quickened, and it became essential for product teams to work more quickly and responsively. The classical UX design process, which is now pretty much obsolete, took a “waterfall” approach.

Student teams are challenged to design models of Egyptian funerary barges for the purpose of transporting mummies through the underworld to the afterlife. Students design and build prototypes using materials and tools like the ancient Egyptians had at their disposal. Students learn more about assistive devices, specifically biomedical engineering applied to computer engineering concepts, with an engineering challenge to create an automatic floor cleaner computer program.

For instance, a UX designer is a generalist who takes charge of all the UX tasks, while a visual designer focuses on the prototype phase and creates pleasing and useful interfaces. Lastly, ongoing feedback from real-world use after product launch can offer additional insights into the UX design’s effectiveness over time. Continuous improvement based on this feedback can lead to lasting success. When remote UX design teams integrate these strategies, they can maintain productivity, foster collaboration and deliver successful projects. First, utilize collaboration tools such as Slack for communication, Figma or Adobe XD for design sharing, and Asana or Trello for project management.

How To Flip Houses In California: The 5 Best Cities In 2024

house flipper

Once you’ve identified the areas you want to look for real estate in, one of the most complex stages of the process is actually tracking down the houses you want to flip. A scanner becomes available within the game that lets you point the tool at items to instantly sell them for extra money. If you want an empty apartment, then use the scanning tool to get rid of the furniture, posters, etc. Interior design is an obvious yet important concept in House Flipper.

There are requests from characters that you can fulfill and houses you can buy, fix up, and sell for a profit. The changes to the meat and potatoes of House Flipper are minimal – a quality-of-life addition here, and an extra mode like Sandbox there – which feels like the right balance for fans of a slice-of-life sim like this. If you’re someone who spent hours perfecting their tiling techniques or real estate profit strategies, the last thing you want is to grab a sequel and find yourself in unfamiliar territory. Just the same way you don’t want to buy the new Sims game and find out you have to solve a sudoku puzzle when you want them to woohoo and you have to do their taxes now. However, building houses is only part of the Sandbox experience—the integrated modding tools let you share them with other players. The game uses mod.io rather than the Steam Workshop for mods, as the original did, but you can now upload houses for the first time.

Games

If you follow the 70% rule, you will pay no more than $120,000 for the home's purchase price. Having your contractor license is not necessary to flip houses in California or anywhere else in the United States. Having your real estate license allows you to skip over real estate agents, and in some cases, not have to pay a brokerage commission when you buy and then resell the home. The most successful investment strategy is to find an up-and-coming neighborhood and buy property before the area becomes popular. Flipping homes in the Gold Rush State is certainly not for the faint of heart, but it has the potential to be wildly profitable.

Evaluate Your Skill Sets, Commitment & Available Time

“I would say the best advice would probably be to start off working with or helping another investor that already has experience so that you can actually learn from them,” says Donate. He also recommends hiring a seasoned real estate agent familiar with house flipping. Let’s get into the details of where and how you can become an experienced real estate investor in the Golden State. You do not need a real estate license or a contractor license to flip houses in California or any other state in the US, for that matter. If you are interested in the details of flipping houses without a license, check out our complete guide here.

Gameplay

Given that over half of the houses in the United States are 39 years old or older, and in Los Angeles the average age of homes is a staggering 56 years old, the opportunity for house flippers is immense. Older homes often require updates, repairs, and renovations, making them ideal candidates for successful house flips. I'm so glad Frozen District has given us more freedom when it comes to the types of projects we take on. In House Flipper 2, there's a lot more variety when it comes to jobs so you're not constantly doing up houses and recycling the same bits of furniture. Seasoned California house flippers will price out home repairs before purchasing a property, and typically leave themselves a cushion for the unexpected. But Material costs have surged by an average of 19%, showing a slight decrease as supply chains aim for recovery, yet remaining considerably elevated compared to pre-pandemic levels.

This rule states that you should never pay more than 70% of the after-repair-value or “ARV” of a property, less any repairs, that you’re flipping. The ARV is your estimate of the home’s worth after all repairs have been done. Los Angeles is by far the largest city in California by population, with a population of 3.8 million.

Final Thoughts On House Flipping In California

According to recent data from 2023, the average profit made by house flippers in California was an impressive $92,500. Like in the original game, the aim is to purchase houses, renovate them, and sell them for profit. There's also a tonne of odd jobs for our flipper character to complete which earns you cash to invest in your future projects, as well as a sandbox mode so you can create the home of your dreams. I've converted a cafe into a book shop, refurbished a beach cabin, and given a grandmother somewhere suitable for her grandson to stay. Each job comes with its own characters, stories, and criteria, and it's up to you to meet the requirements of the task in front of you.

It may not seem like it, but Threads has already surpassed Twitter: Bad times are coming for Elon Musk

In the first quarter of this year, California was the state to register the third-highest number of REO properties in the U.S. This software program is potentially malicious or may contain unwanted bundled software. You can begin breathing a second life into the property by picking up bottles, cans, plates, silverware, etc. When all of the clutter has been thrown away, you can see the entirety of the soiled environment.

Add-ons for this game

Thanks to House Flipper 2's improved tools, I'm finding this cycle more satisfying than ever. Increases in construction costs could eat away at your flip’s profit, or put you in the red. A delay getting permits, or having materials delivered, would also decrease profits due to increased holding costs. The longer you own the house before flipping it, the tighter the profit margin. “Today, I would be slightly below your goal, your transparent price. I would be a little bit under because you don’t know if you’re even going to get to where the comps are at.

As the chaotic rooms become free of trash and residue, you can rearrange the furniture for a more orderly look. Along with cleaning the homes, the requests often require other tasks, such as changing the radiator, etc. Playing House Flipper 2, after dedicating so many hours to the original home renovation sim, gives me the same satisfaction as doing up an actual property. As I make my way through the different tasks, I can see exactly where developer Frozen District has improved things – everything from the visuals to the gameplay, and even the quality of life features.

Despite these variables, the fact remains that house flipping in California has proven to be a profitable venture for many investors, making it an appealing option for those considering real estate investments. House flipping in California holds immense potential for robust returns, regardless of the specific city in which one chooses to invest. The Golden State's diverse real estate market offers ample opportunities for savvy investors to capitalize on.

You may get offers that are considerably over your asking price too, which is certainly a nice perk. The interior designer can stage the home to make it more appealing to a wider audience. Their expertise can boost your skills and your ability to take on more distressed property projects. Having a real estate and contractor license can come in handy, especially if you plan to make real estate flipping your primary source of income. If the profits aren't compelling enough, pay attention to the more significant loan prospects, a strong buyer market, aging homes, and the potential flood of foreclosed homes. According to the 2024 Housing Market Forecast by the California Association of Realtors, the state's median home price is set to increase by 6.2% this year. Existing, single-family property sales are predicted to increase by 22.9% from 2023’s projected pace of 266,200 totaling 327,100 units in 2024. Let's dive into the exciting world of flipping houses in California.

This year is turning out to be a particularly great one for house flippers, who are profiting from the wave of people leaving their apartments in the cities in search of houses in the suburbs. According to Attom, the average gross earnings from flips last year were the highest they’ve been since 2005. House Flipper is an immersive real estate experience that lets you take property management gigs to clean and install items in houses. Upon earning enough resources, you will be able to invest in your own house to flip or keep for yourself. Multiple Independent Variables Research Methods in Psychology 2nd Canadian Edition

mixed factorial design

However, it is important to make sure the individual dependent variables are correlated with each other by computing an internal consistency measure such as Cronbach’s \(\alpha\). If they are not correlated with each other, then it does not make sense to combine them into a measure of a single construct. If they have poor internal consistency, then they should be treated as separate dependent variables. This example nicely illustrates the distinction we made between simultaneity and dependency. On the two aspects of the timing dimension, this study was a concurrent-dependent design answering a set of related research questions.

3. Factorial designs: Round 2¶

Introverts perform better than extraverts when they have not ingested any caffeine. But extraverts perform better than introverts when they have ingested 4 mg of caffeine per kilogram of body weight. We agree with Greene (2007), who states that the value of the typological approach mainly lies in the different dimensions of mixed methods that result from its classifications. In this article, the primary dimensions include purpose, theoretical drive, timing, point of integration, typological vs. interactive approaches, planned vs. emergent designs, and complexity (also see secondary dimensions in Table 1). Unfortunately, all of these dimensions are not reflected in any single design typology reviewed here. Contrary to other authors, however, we do not consider these designs as a feature of a whole study, but rather, in line with Guest (2013), as a feature of one part of a design in which one qualitative and one quantitative component are combined.

mixed factorial design

1.2. Measures of Different Constructs¶

Some authors state that design typologies are particularly useful for beginning researchers and interactive approaches are suited for experienced researchers (Creswell and Plano Clark 2011). This makes an interactive approach desirable, also for beginning researchers. Substantively, it can be useful to think of integration or mixing as comparing and bringing together two (or more) components on the basis of one or more of the purposes set out in the first section of this article.

2. Multiple Independent Variables¶

For this mixed-factorial design, we need to account for the fact thatwe have multiple observations coming from each person, so we will add arandom-effect of “subID”. After accounting for this statisticaldependence in our data, we can now fairly test the effects of Age Group, and Condition with residuals that are independent of each other. Again, for our purposes, the critical thing to note is that theF-values for the main-effects and interactions are the same between ourRM ANOVAs and the mixed-effects model. Without delving into themathematical details, this is a good demonstration that the appropriaterandom-effects our regression model make it analogous to the factorialANOVA. This allows us to capitalize on the benefits of mixed-effectsregression for designs that we would normally analyze using factorialANOVA.

A mixed methods design can be thought out in advance, but can also arise during the course of the conduct of the study; the latter is called an “emergent” design (Creswell and Plano Clark 2011). Emergent designs arise, for example, when the researcher discovers during the study that one of the components is inadequate (Morse and Niehaus 2009). Addition of a component of the other type can sometimes remedy such an inadequacy. Initiation, for example, is the further exploration of unexpected outcomes.

3.7. Interactions¶

For example, all participants could be tested either while using a cell phone or while not using a cell phone and either during the day or during the night. In a within-subjects factorial design, all of the independent variables are manipulated within subjects. All participants could be tested both while using a cell phone and while not using a cell phone and both during the day and during the night. The advantages and disadvantages of these two approaches are the same as those discussed in Chapter 6. The within-subjects design is more efficient for the researcher and controls extraneous participant variables.

These mixed methods researchers are likely to believe that qualitative and quantitative data and approaches will add insights as one considers most, if not all, research questions. The key point of this section is for the researcher to begin a study with at least one research question and then carefully consider what the purposes for mixing are. One can use mixed methods to examine different aspects of a single research question, or one can use separate but related qualitative and quantitative research questions. In all cases, the mixing of methods, methodologies, and/or paradigms will help answer the research questions and make improvements over a more basic study design. Fuller and richer information will be obtained in the mixed methods study. Figure 8.5 shows examples of these same kinds of interactions when one of the independent variables is quantitative and the results are plotted in a line graph.

Non-Experimental Studies With Factorial Designs

Another important use of complex correlational research is to explore possible causal relationships among variables. This might seem surprising given that “correlation does not imply causation”. It is true that correlational research cannot unambiguously establish that one variable causes another. Complex correlational research, however, can often be used to rule out other plausible interpretations. Importantly, the effect of the gas variable on driving depends on the levels of having a key. Or, to state it in reverse, the effect of the key variable on driving depends on the levesl of the gas variable.

Assuming the restricted version of the mixed effect model, Minitab’s balanced ANOVA routine output is given as follows. A nice collection of examples of mixed methods studies can be found in Hesse-Biber (2010), from which the following examples are taken. Factorial designs are the basis for another important principle besides blocking - examining several factors simultaneously. We will start by looking at just two factors and then generalize to more than two factors. Investigating multiple factors in the same design automatically gives us replication for each of the factors.

Similarly, the empirical outcome/effect and process in a study with the purpose of expansion might be investigated independently, or the process study might take the effect/outcome as given (dependent). The overall goal of mixed methods research, of combining qualitative and quantitative research components, is to expand and strengthen a study’s conclusions and, therefore, contribute to the published literature. In all studies, the use of mixed methods should contribute to answering one’s research questions.

But there are also plausible third variables that could explain this relationship. It could be, for example, that people who are lower in SES tend to be more religious and that it is their greater religiosity that causes them to be more generous. Or it could be that people who are lower in SES tend to come from certain ethnic groups that emphasize generosity more than other ethnic groups. The researchers dealt with these potential third variables, however, by measuring them and including them in their statistical analyses. They found that neither religiosity nor ethnicity was correlated with generosity and were therefore able to rule them out as third variables. This does not prove that SES causes greater generosity because there could still be other third variables that the researchers did not measure.

(c) Illustration – refers to the use of qualitative data to illustrate quantitative findings, often referred to as putting “meat on the bones” of “dry” quantitative findings. I have a Master of Science degree in Applied Statistics and I’ve worked on machine learning algorithms for professional businesses in both healthcare and retail. I’m passionate about statistics, machine learning, and data visualization and I created Statology to be a resource for both students and teachers alike.

Here we have shown that one often needs to construct a research design to fit one’s unique research situation and questions. This is why we emphasize in this article the importance of learning to build on simple designs and construct one’s own design for one’s research questions. This will often result in a combination or “hybrid” design that goes beyond basic designs found in typologies, and a methodology section that provides much more information than a design name. Notice that Morse and Niehaus (2009) included four mixed methods designs (the first four designs shown above) and four multimethod designs (the second set of four designs shown above) in their typology.

Is this the best shawarma in Los Angeles? Los Angeles Times

shawarma house

You choose from lamb, beef or chicken, sliced fresh. Then, either stuffed into pitas or stacked into sandwiches or rolled up in thin, lavash-like wraps. Open since 2017, Al Basch is one of the newer restaurants on this list, but when it comes to a quick, affordable meal in Hollywood, this order-at-the-counter spot on Sunset is already one of our favorites. As the name suggests, chicken is the star of the show here, and whether you’re in the mood for shawarma, kebabs, or whole chicken, Al Basch is making the best in the neighborhood. The shawarma itself has a subtle tanginess that we love, and if you order it on a plate, it comes with an excellent side of rice and salad (two things that tend to be afterthoughts at other spots). Also, get an extra side of hummus—it’s very good.

SPICY CHICKEN

shawarma house

NBC Chicago's Food Guy Steve Dolinsky passed through Bridgeview recently, when he stumbled upon a tiny strip mall, with some of the best shawarma around. Tried Hummus Shawarma with beef and 6 pieces of falafels. Next to the liquor store’s cashier, a customer hit a call bell twice in summoning La Cocina Mediterránea’s cook to bring out his to-go order.

Tel Aviv Grill

Bound by a thin but sturdy pita bread toasted on both sides, the wraps are stuffed with sour Lebanese pickle strips, French fries, pungent garlic sauce and a filing of choice inside. I’ve tried a lot of middle eastern food and it was alright. However, shawarma house is one of the only places that really stood out to me. The rice is very fluffy and full of flavor and the skewer as well. The “sampler” packs beef, chicken and falafel wraps cut in half to go along with fries, pickles, chilies and an assortment of house sauces. The tray is great for gatherings or for feeding four to five people for $30 in these inflationary times.

La Cocina Mediterránea serves tasty falafels, shawarma from within a liquor store

Perfectly barbecued and covered in a special house marinade, it’s sweet and salty with just the right amount of spice. When it comes to great shawarma in LA, it doesn’t get more classic than Skaf’s. The tiny, order-at-the-counter Lebanese grill in North Hollywood has been operating for almost two decades (they have a second location in Glendale as well). Both the chicken and beef shawarma are equally good in our book, so just do what we do and get the mixed plate. Be sure to throw in a cabbage salad and some stuffed grape leaves, too—both are excellent. The vertical spits are clearly the stars at Hello Shawarma, wedged between a Hello Hookah and a Hello Thai in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it mall along south Harlem Avenue.

With locations in both Westwood and downtown Santa Monica, Sunnin is an LA institution and easily our favorite option for shawarma on the Westside. Both the chicken and beef are equally delicious, so try both and then fight with your friends over which is better. If you’re really hungry, definitely go with the plate (it comes with hummus, salad, rice, baba ghanouj, labneh, and soup), otherwise, the wrap is ideal for a quick meal on your lunch hour.

Shawarma isn’t only for the wee hours though. The spits have been turning and the shawarma is already crisping. “The round sesame bread, which is our signature, it’s called the Bashka. We put bell peppers, mushrooms, corn, olives and it’s on the grill, with your preference of American cheese or pepperjack cheese,” he said.

SHAWARMA HOUSE

Always greeted with a friendly smile and the food is awesome!! But the falafel and kebab were also delicious. For first timers at La Cocina Mediterránea, patrons order at the restaurant counter but pay at the liquor store cashier right next to it. Andrew Faour started by opening The Pub at Chino Hills with chef Matthew Carpenter. Souk Shawarma harkens back to his heritage, complete with black and white photos of the Souk. Dad is from Zeda, Syria, and his mom is from nearby Farouzi.

Sauces

Building on the Middle Eastern menu at Bavel, Saffy’s serves food worthy of a special occasion with the energy of a neighborhood spot. Getting a table at this glamorous kebab house in East Hollywood might take some work, but the thrill of eating here makes the fuss worth it. One of the dishes we always save room for is the shawarma. It’s filled with a mixture of perfectly marinated lamb and beef, neatly shaved into thin slices from a rotating wood-fired spit, then wrapped inside fresh laffa so it can be eaten sandwich-style. A bit of tomato, lettuce, tahini, spicy ajika sauce, and sumac-dusted onions are layered in for contrast—all of the textures and flavors work together like a family on a whitewater rafting excursion.

Al Basch Chicken

If we had to pick one shawarma in LA to reign supreme over its cone-shaped kin, it’s the mixed lamb and beef combo from Sincerely Syris (formerly known as Hollywood Shawarma). Thinly shaved and tender as filet mignon, each slice at this Syrian-owned spot is rich with a peppery potpourri of spices. But the real magic is how the whole thing comes together in the pan-grilled wrap—the tender meat is coated in nutty tahini for a combination that literally melts in your mouth. Hollywood Shawarma also makes fantastic chicken shawarma, and if you’re hungry, you could probably finish one of each in a sitting. This counter-service operation has a takeout window right along the Walk of Fame, with a couple of stools scattered across the sidewalk. Drop by for a quick, casual lunch or a late-night dinner steps from Hollywood and Vine.

Carpenter previously worked at Momed in Beverly Hills, where duck shawarma remains popular, so duck also makes an appearance on Souk Shawarma's menu. “The most popular one is the wrap, which is called in the language of Arabic the Shrak, and it’s the most traditional bread we make here,” said co-owner Mahmmod Abunijmeh. As a foodie and Milwaukee native I can honestly say this is some of the best food in the city! Quick, always delicious, and the staff is great. I eat here more than I'd like to admit, haha. For now, being paired with a liquor store gives La Cocina Mediterránea a distinct convenience in offering a drink menu more expansive than most.

Nackoud is also eager to remodel the kitchen and put a new falafel machine and shawarma spits to use. The bowls are served more like plates with a side of zesty fattoush salad sans pita chips to pair with a heaping of fluffy yellow basmati rice. La Cocina Mediterránea’s falafels offer a good crunch and an even better taste. They can be ordered with tacos, bowls and wraps or a la carte from six- to 24-piece options. Beef shawarma strips come tender, slightly fatty and are delectably seasoned while the chicken shawarma is juicy to the bite.

La Cocina Mediterránea carried over much of the old staples from BP Grill, but the heart of its menu is Mediterranean, which focuses on falafels, shawarma and salads. In general, eateries paired with liquor stores are a rarity in the county. A husband-and-wife duo split responsibilities between the liquor store and kitchen, respectively. On weekends Kamal keeps his business — located near the intersection of Hollywood and Vine next to a tattoo studio and a juice bar; Peggy Lee’s Walk of Fame star is right in front — open until 3 a.m.

CHICKEN WINGS (GRILLED)

There are tons of great places to get an excellent plate of lamb in Glendale, but when you want tender lamb shavings and a side of french fries, make your way to Best Shawarma. Whether you order it on a fluffy French roll, in a pita wrap, or on a plate with a side of rice, pair your lamb wrap with their thick-cut fries and a side of nutty tahini sauce. Tel Aviv Grill is an Israeli mini-chain with locations dotted across the Valley.

The Best Restaurants In Santa Monica

As for their commitment to shawarma, Abunijmeh said in an area where there are dozens of options, they don’t think twice about spending the time on the labor to hand-stack their cones each day. Driving down Harlem Avenue south of the Stevenson Expressway offers dozens of delicious eating options. Shawarma House offers delicious dining, takeout and delivery to Milwaukee & Brookfield Wisconsin. Shawarma House has been recognized for its outstanding Middle Eastern cuisine, excellent service and friendly staff. But La Cocina Mediterránea is true hidden gem where a full kitchen meets a classic convenience store, at least for now as Nackoud is readying remodeling plans. Amid the din of dings, La Cocina Mediterránea stood out as one of the unlikeliest places to munch on flavorful falafels and savory shawarma in Orange County.

The larger variations are made using a familiar Los Angeles staff of life — big, thin flour tortillas. They admirably stand in for khubz, the papery bread traditionally used for shawarma. Fatteh is to breakfast as shawarma is to late-night nourishment. Adham Kamal, who took over Hollywood Shawarma just over a year ago, grew up in As-Suwayda (sometimes also spelled Sweida) in southwestern Syria, about 70 miles south of Damascus and near the Jordanian border.

The 10 Finest Shawarma Specialists in Los Angeles

Located right on Melrose in the Fairfax District, they’re a total neighborhood spot, but one with food good enough to leave your neighborhood to eat. The chicken shawarma is marinated in their special house sauce and has a slight sweetness to it that separates it from other great spots in LA. You can get it with pita, baguette, or laffa, but we recommend just doing the plate. At $22, it’s definitely on the pricier side, but the portion size is massive and good for two meals, easily. Marouch has been in operation since 1982, and is one of the city's longest-standing Armenian/Lebanese restaurants. And while many people come to this Hollywood strip mall spot for their incredible mezze (the muhammara will change you), no meal is complete here without an order of their beef shawarma.

The family’s story is as intricate as the food. Armbay and Dotee adapt the Syrian recipes from their mother, Nawal, though both of their parents are Circassian by heritage. Their journey underpins the impetus for the brothers to create their weekly pop-up. I’m very happy for a weekly destination for homey fatteh … and equally curious to see how the direction of the brothers’ Syrian-Circassian cooking will keep evolving. This week’s review is about Nawal, a weekend backyard pop-up in Solano Canyon, near Dodger Stadium.

The tray is great for gatherings or for feeding four to five people for $30 in these inflationary times.

A trio of salads — tabouleh, Greek, sumac — rounds out its offerings. Finding good shawarma in LA isn’t difficult—but finding great shawarma is. Here are 11 restaurants where you can lose yourself in shawarma bliss. One nice touch is fresh olive and pickle bar, featuring crunchy carrots, cauliflower and other pickled veg. Cooks will either slice the shawarma old school, with a thin, long serrated knife, or if it’s busy, they’ll pull out the electric shavers, which do the trick nicely.

Their flagship in Encino looks like any other fast-casual lunch counter, but the quality of the food here stands out like a pair of Crocs at a wedding. As early as 11am, a line forms out front and a majority of the people waiting are getting their beef shawarma. Order it as a hefty pita pocket and it’ll come stuffed with a generous portion of shaved, marinated meat, garlicky yogurt, and chopped tomatoes and cucumber. The beef option usually sells out by 3pm, but the equally juicy chicken shawarma is a worthy runner-up. Ta-Eem is one of those places that you’ve either never heard of, or you’ve been going to twice a week for three years.

A group of construction workers in orange reflective vests walked into Buena Liquor Market, which shares space with the restaurant’s kitchen, triggering its doorbell before loading up on chips and beer. More than one friend from across the Arab world asks for their shawarma to be rolled in only one side of the pita. It was designed to be compact and intense in flavor.

Is there anything better than fire-roasted, spit-shaved meat crammed into a sandwich or piled on a plate with rice, salad, and hummus? Popular theory suggests that the vertical spit arose in Turkey. Now the practice has spread all over the world, with many variations in the Middle East.

Kamal has been working at shawarma stands since he was a teenager. Before arriving in Los Angeles in 2021, he was living — and making shawarma — in Venezuela, where Syrians have been migrating and creating a community since the late 19th century.

Even if you aren’t roaming around the deep Valley, ’Saj is worth the trek. This Lebanese bakery/restaurant in Granada Hills has an excellent menu with over 70 different items on it, but the chicken shawarma should always be your first move. Perfectly marinated with just the right amount of char on the outside, this is shawarma that makes you involuntarily close your eyes and briefly forget about the 150 other things you have to do today. Also, be sure to order some baked goods like the crunchy, cheese and onion-filled saroukh. La Cocina Mediterránea also serves hummus, which can be ordered three types of ways, including spicy and loaded with beef shawarma.

The Portland Head Light is one of the most famous, having stood on the lonely, rocky peninsula of Fort Williams Park since 1791. Visit the museum in the former Keeper’s Quarters to learn about the history of the light and see displays of navigational aids and old photographs. After your tour, you can hike the coastal trails in the park, taking in magnificent views as waves pound the rocks. Perched on a peninsula jutting out into the island-specked Casco Bay under vast skies, the scent of the ocean on the breeze, this enchanting spot is rich in history.

Featured Shore Excursions

No trip to Portland is complete without indulging in some fresh seafood. There are many places where you can find the best lobster in town such as Eventide Oyster Company or J’s Oyster Bar. You can take a scenic train ride for lunch or go on a lobster boat tour where you can catch your own lobster dinner. For those who prefer their lobsters served whole with all the fixings, there are plenty of restaurants throughout Portland that serve traditional lobster dinners. If you prefer more flexibility and convenience when traveling around Portland, consider using taxi services or ride-sharing apps like Uber and Lyft.

Alternatively, if you are staying in one of the many hotels near the airport, you can arrange for transportation directly from your hotel. To stretch your legs, head to the northern end of the city to connect with the Back Cove Trail. The trail completely encircles the Back Cove — a tidal basin — and offers great views of the Portland skyline. A good starting point for visitors is the Ocean Gateway Visitor Information Center at 14 Ocean Gateway Pier. THE place for souvenirs and really nice apparel, Ports of Call is located near the cruise terminal on Commercial Street. The city’s Arts District is full of galleries and antique shops, while the Old Port area has everything from clothing boutiques to homewares.

Explore the Historic Portland Head Light and Fort Williams Park

This scenic park offers breathtaking views of Casco Bay along with walking trails and picnic areas perfect for families. For beer lovers, there are plenty of breweries near the terminal that offer tours and tastings. One popular option is Shipyard Brewing Company – they’ve been brewing craft beer in Portland for over 25 years and offer daily tours of their facility. If you’re in search of souvenirs or gifts to take home, head to some of Portland’s local street shops.

Kayaking tours of Casco Bay offer a unique perspective on the coastline and allow guests to see wildlife like seals and seabirds up close. There are also hiking trails in nearby state parks like Bradbury Mountain State Park that offer stunning views of the surrounding countryside. For those interested in trying local craft beer, brewery tours are also available from the pier. These tours take visitors to some of Portland’s top breweries, such as Allagash Brewing Company and Shipyard Brewing Company. Visitors can sample different beers and learn about the brewing process from knowledgeable guides. But Portland isn’t just a great place to start your vacation – it’s also a gateway to other popular destinations in Maine.

Visitors can also grab a bite to eat at one of the many eateries inside the market, such as Kamasouptra or Maine Squeeze Juice Cafe. Another must-see attraction just outside of downtown Portland is the iconic Portland Head Light. This lighthouse has been guiding ships into Portland Harbor since 1791 and remains one of Maine’s most photographed landmarks. As mentioned earlier, the terminal offers everything you need to ensure a smooth embarkation process. When it comes time to set sail from Portland Maine Cruise Port , you’ll be treated to stunning views of Casco Bay as your ship heads out into open waters. It’s the perfect way to cap off an unforgettable vacation in one of America’s most charming cities.

It is not the first time the port has had problems with its container operations. In 2010, it made a deal with ICTSI to operate the container terminal but the company became embroiled in a labor dispute that dragged on for years. The labor slowdown began in 2012 and by 2015 carriers were leaving the port. The International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) filed for bankruptcy in 2023 due to the dispute but finally reached a settlement agreement with ICTSI in 2024. Port executive Keith Leavitt wrote to shippers saying they had decided to suspend the operation after negotiations with a potential third-party operator collapsed last week.

Some of the most popular flavors include maple bacon, pomegranate, ginger-glazed sweet potato, and some surprise seasonal favorites. During the early 19th century, Portland became an important shipbuilding center and one of the most prosperous fishing ports on the Atlantic. Situated on a peninsula on Casco Bay in southern Maine about 100 miles north of Boston, Portland is Maine’s most populous city and a highlight of New England cruises.
